The Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority (AMHA) kicked off its United Way Campaign on Thursday, October 26, 2017 with a planning meeting for all managers at their central office.  The goal for this year’s campaign is $27,750, which is a 5% increase to the $26,424 collected last year.  Staff from AMHA also participated in the Read to Me Day on Thursday, November 2nd.  Volunteers gave 30 minutes of their time reading in a classroom to encourage the development of strong reading skills to children in Akron or Barberton Public schools.

United Way envisions a future where EVERYONE has the tools to be financially empowered, where every student has the skills to succeed in the classroom and beyond and where no family is devastated by addiction.

They have created the following BOLD GOALS for 2025 as concrete benchmarks for success and hold them accountable to the community:

  • 65% of Akron Public Schools third-graders reading at or above grade level (currently at 38%)
  • 90% of Akron Public Schools high-school students graduating in 4 years, with 60% college/career ready (currently at 75% and 21% respectively)
  • Financially empower 11,000 people, currently 42,000 people in Akron are considered to the “working poor”
  • Reduce ER Visits due to drug overdoses to 1,000 (currently at 2,400 annually)
