Occupancy Department

To apply for housing, you would begin the process by attending an Orientation at the AMHA Central office located at 100 West Cedar. Two Orientations are conducted every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Sign in begins at 8:00 a.m. for both the 9:00 and 1:00 Orientation. If the 1:00 Orientation is not full after the 8:00 a.m. sign in, additional applicants who sign in by 1:00 p.m. may be seen.

Applicants must bring the following documentation to the Orientation:

  • Birth Certificate for ALL family members.
  • Social Security Card for ALL family members.
  • Statement of Income from ALL source(s) for ALL family members who receive income. Include name and address of income sources.
  • Driver's License, State ID, or DD214.
  • Name and address of bank(s) & value of assets.
  • Green Card and Passport for ALL family members who are not US citizens.
  • NOTE: All applicants must be 18 years of age at the time of application. Any balance owed to AMHA must be paid in full before we can offer housing.

    TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR SUBSIDIZED HOUSING, YOUR INCOME MUST BE WITHIN THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES:

    Zero income individuals are also eligible for housing assistance.

    Waiting List Preference Points

    Applicants are placed on the waiting list according to local preference points and then by date and time of application. Our local preference points are assigned to each client based on the following:

  • Rent Burden or Homeless: 7 points
        - Given to clients who are paying more than 30% of their income for rent and utilities or living in substandard housing.
  • Involuntary Displacement by Government Action: 3 points
        - Given to clients who have been involuntarily displaced by government action
  • Veteran: 2 points
        - Given to veterans or spouses of veterans. This status is also given to family members of veterans living in the same household.
        - Veteran status is verified with a DD214
  • Resident: 1 point
        - Given to clients living or working within Summit County.
  • Various Housing Programs at AMHA

  • Conventional Housing: Housing for families, seniors and singles that is managed and maintained by AMHA. The offer for housing will be based on family and bedroom size and may be anywhere in Summit County.

  • Conventional Housing - Single Family Homes: This is an incentive discretionary program for residents who demonstrate positive tenancy behaviors. Eligible clients will be recommended by his/her housing manager.

  • Housing Choice Voucher Program(HCVP): This program consists of housing that is privately owned and operated by individual landlords. The client will be contacted by the Housing Choice Voucher Program department when his/her application comes to the top of the wait list. Issuance of a voucher allows the participant to choose his/her own housing.

  • Housing Choice Voucher Program(HCVP) Site-based: This program consists of the following: 1 bedroom units located at the Chapel Hill Towers and the Retirement Residence of Green (designated for elderly families 62 & over / handicap / disabled); one bedroom units located at Channelwood Village; and one and two bedroom units located in West Akron on Frederick Boulevard. The client will be contacted by the HCVP Department once their name reaches the top of the waiting list.

  • Single Room Occupancy (SRO): Located at the Midtown Apartments on East Market St. This program offers efficiency apartments only. To be eligible, the client must be single and homeless. Applications are taken at the Midtown on a monthly basis and the waiting list is based on vacancy. This program is administered by our HCVP Department.

  • Wilbeth Arlington Homes: This program consists of 2, 3 and 4 bedroom units. The client can complete an application at Wilbeth Homes, 910 Eller Ave., Phone 330-773-6825, Monday thru Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

  • AMHA does not provide emergency housing.
